1997 Mercedes-Benz “Falling in Love Again” commercial

Seeing this as a kid, it nearly inspired me to pursue advertising. I knew nothing about Marlene Dietrich other than her name, which is one of those names you just know. I knew very little about the heritage of Mercedes-Benz. I was never much of a car enthusiast. But there’s so much feeling conveyed without any of that present. This YouTube clip informs me that this clip was voted the third greatest car commercial of all time by Car and Driver magazine. It’s not hard to tell why; it is serious and elegant and seems to be about something (history, unity, group think maybe). All things that you want to understand as a teenager even if they are ultimately out of reach. Like many things, this car commercial isn’t as romantic as it seemed in 1997. But then what is.
