My highlight of last month’s EMP Pop Conference was a Q&A with songwriter Diane Warren. Best known for enormously successful power ballads for acts like Celine Dion, LeAnn Rimes, and Michael Bolton, as well as sprightly, uptempo pop gems for Ace of Base, DeBarge, and um, Tyra Banks, Warren was frank and even a bit gruff in her chat with Ann Powers. I expected a sort of shrinking violet based on the long-told trope that Warren, despite some of the gloopiest songs ever written to her credit, had never been in love. Instead she shattered expectations, if not hearts. As an admitted “big fan” of Warren’s work, I put together this Warren starter kit. Dig in.
