Saluting Erv
The newsprint will read RIP Prop Joe and it won’t be wrong. But I doff to Ervin H. Burrell tonight, fictional outgoing commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department, who was murdered, in a way, just as Joe was. He by the hand of Tommy Carcetti, a venal and marsupiallian leader. As Rawls steps in, keeping the seat warm for the blooming but spooked Daniels, Erv will move to a city crime...
My favorite part of this segment of Drunk History is probably the bizarre casting of Ashley Johnson in a bit part. You know, Growing Pain’s Ashley Johnson?
The Friday Night Lights Problem
In tomorrow’s New York Times Magazine Virginia Heffernan throws her weight behind “Friday Night Lights,” the ratings-maligned, critically-hailed one-hour drama on NBC. Gawker pinch hitter Greg Wasserstrom, typically of Wonkette, responds with unpithy degradation of said piece and show. But both stories are oddly bereft of context or insight. Heffernan writes in her piece:

I was 11 years old when The Client debuted in theaters. I saw it with my father, sister and brother on opening weekend. It was my Dad’s weekend and he’d just begun feeling out the concept of “his weekend,” what to do with three kids figuring post-divorce life. Because he was crashing in a spare room at his buddy’s house, we were crashing on the floor of a spare room...
This season of The Wire feels wrong. Telegraphed. David Simon’s had a bone to pick with prize-hungry editors who stormed the walls of his beloved Baltimore Sun and I can’t blame him for ill will and relentless slander in interview after interview. I have seen top-down short-sightedness in the publishing world. But execution of this “fifth” element of city life is shrill,...

The Face of Abasement
Reports of the transmogrified, charticle-ized, bite-sized, union-defied 2008 Golden Globes are streaming out high, hard and negative. Naturally NBC is being hammered for a number of reasons. Results trickled out faster and with less pomp via CNN. Show graphics were on the scale of a low-rent Ohio public access station. And a commercial-stacked program stifled even the vaguest momentum during what...

Reading Peter Biskind’s Easy Riders, Raging Bulls right now and during the Bogdonovich/Last Picture Show chapter, Biskind describes Cybill Shepherd as such: “She was big (five foot nine) and robust, radiating health and wholesomeness. With blond hair, pert nose, and creamy complexion, she was stunningly beautiful.” And later: “She sat on the floor told him she was reading...

Anyone Else But Ellen
Clips: Juno Star Ellen Page Lives In A Haunted Whorehouse Jezebel-lers riffing in the comments on Diablo Cody with her hand up Ellen Page’s back like she was some blithe, vernacularizing marionette. You know those stories about how Page brought all of her music taste to the character of Juno? And the one about how she namedropped Goldfrapp in Hard Candy? Is this proof that Page is completely...
